Online casino play in Alberta, explained
Checked October 8, 2026By the Threshold Desk
Some doors open at home, on a phone or a laptop, with no casino floor behind them. Alberta's regulated online casino market opened on July 13, 2026; this page explains who runs it and how to check sites.
How the market works
Alberta's regulated online gaming market launched on July 13, 2026. Two bodies share the work. The Alberta iGaming Corporation, or AiGC, manages the market, while AGLC regulates it. Both names come up again when checking a site, which the next section covers.
An operator needs two things to run legally. The first is registration with AGLC; the second is an operating agreement signed with AiGC. A site without both steps is not operating legally in the province. At launch, 22 iGaming sites had been approved.
Play is open only to people physically located in Alberta, and every approved operator must make sure of that. The legal gambling age in the province is 18. On a casino floor, staff must check government-issued photo ID for anyone who appears to be under 25.
Checking a site
The AiGC keeps a directory of approved iGaming sites at abigaming.ca. Players can check any online operator against it before opening an account or depositing money. If an operator is not in the directory, it is not regulated. Approved operators also display the AiGC logo on their sites. The directory remains the place to confirm a name, since a logo is only an image.
Play Alberta, at PlayAlberta.ca, is the province's own online gaming site. AGLC runs it, the same body that regulates the market. Its revenue goes to the Government of Alberta. The legal gambling age of 18 applies there as on any other site.
This guide and its ads
Alberta's advertising standards apply to anyone who advertises an online gaming site, and that includes this guide. Ads must carry a responsible gambling message and must not target minors or use people who appear to be minors. They must not link gaming to attractiveness or status.
Behind the Doors carries paid links on its home page only, each marked Ad. There are three: one in the menu, one just below the first screen and one near the end of the page. All three lead to the same online casino partner, and the site earns a commission. The partner can change. Inner pages, this one included, carry no paid links.
Before opening an account anywhere, a reader can look up the operator in the AiGC directory at abigaming.ca. A site missing from it is not regulated.
